Replacement Window Styles & Options

Replacing windows often improves the energy efficiency and appearance of a home.  Before investing in windows, determine which type is best for the function of the space, look of the home, and features that are most important to you.  Here are some of the most popular window styles we offer:

Double Hung Window AtlantaDouble Hung Windows are made up of two sashes of glass that operate up and down.  The double hung window is often considered the traditional American window.  Most new windows are designed for the sashes to tilt in for easy cleaning.  Depending on what kind of window you choose, you may get a ½ screen or full screen on a double hung window.  Casement Window Atlanta

Casement Windows are a great replacement window option as they allow the maximum ventillation.  These windows crank open and offer air flow through the entire space.  Casement screens are installed on the interior of the house.

French Casement Windows
are European styled windows featuring two operating windows that open outward using a crank handle. A center post is not present, creating an unobstructed view when open.

Awning Window AtlantaAwning Windows are similar to casement windows but they hinge at the top and open toward the outside from the bottom.  Awning windows are typically located in cellars or basements with limited exterior wall space.

Sliding Window AtlantaSliding Windows are a great solution to a large opening where the width is greater than the height.  Often when replacing a large metal window, a sliding window will fill the space nicely offering a smooth operation.  Sliders are available as 2 lite sliders where both sides slide or a 3 lite slider with two operable sides and a stationary center.  Most sliders offer and upgrade to tilt in for easy clean.  You may choose a ½ screen of full screen on sliding windows.

Garden Window AtlantaGarden Windows are the perfect solution for over a kitchen sink.  Do you wish to have flowerpots, grow herbs, or just have a display area over your sink?  A Garden window creates a shelf and has crank out sides for ventilating the area.

Bay Window

Bay and Bow Windows project outside creating additional dimension to your room.  They’reoften a combination of operable and non-operable windows with a seat board at the bottom.

Palladian Window AtlantaPicture Windows are non-operable but often offer the most light into a room making it appear larger. Picture windows can be made into many shapes allowing you to replace Arch, Palladian, Octagon, Trapezoid and Circle windows with new energy efficient windows.

Window Grid Options

The next step is to consider if you want your new windows to have grids.

Many older windows are a single piece of glass divided by grids.  These windows are called True Divided Light (TDL).  The new windows will be double paned, therefore grids are available: between the glass, snap in, simulated divided lite (SDL), or no grid:

Grids Between the Glass (GBG) are popular because they create the look of the traditional grid while offering easy cleaning.   GBG grids are often available in contoured or flat.

Snap in Grids again offer the traditional look of grids but offer the option to remove the grids.  Snap in grids are popular on windows where you have a custom interior color or stained windows and you want the grid color to match exactly.
Simulated divided lite grids are the most authentic to the true divided lite windows as well as the most expensive of the grid options.  SDL grids are most popular on older homes where window replacement is needed for energy efficiency but maintaining the original look of the home is also of utmost importance.  SDL grids are grids applied outside the glass on both the interior and exterior.  On a large picture window, a shadow bar between the glass in addition to the SDL grid is a good idea so as to not view between the grids.

No Grids. The last option, no grids, is certainly one of the most popular in window replacement as it offers a crisp and clean view without obstruction.

Other Window Options

Once you’ve selected the type of window and grid style you may add details to certain windows of your home.

Obscure Glass is a great option for a bathroom window. Obscure glass allows light into the room but provides privacy at the same time.

Blinds between-the-glass allow you to control the light coming into a room as well as provide privacy.

Window Tinting is also available from most window manufactures.  The options are endless to truly customize the windows in your home to fit your every need.
